Word Count Stats for Past Month

Word Count Stats for Past Month

I was going to wait until I finished my writing today to make this blog post, but then I realized if I had done that, it would have been 32 days instead of 31—and that’s construing numbers, which I don’t want to do. So I’ll write this up now, before I begin writing.

31 days ago I made a conscious decision to crack down on my writing habits. I was only 4,000 words deep into the third book’s first draft.

My first book (The Jestivan) took 30 months to write at 120,000 words (the first draft). That’s a rate of 4,000 words per month, 903 words per week, 129 words per day … yikes. But let’s be honest, writing your first book is a huge undertaking.

My second book (The Untenable) took 18 months to write at 180,000 words (first draft). Crunch some numbers and you get 10,000 words per month, 2,258 words per week, 326 words per day. A lot better than my first rodeo, but still entirely too slow.

So far, with my third book (Erafeen #3), I’ve written 70,000 words in the past month (31 days).

I’ll let that marinate for a moment.

The Jestivan: 4,000 words per month, 903 words per week, 129 words per day
The Untenable: 10,000 words per month, 2,258 words per week, 326 words per day
Erafeen #3: 70,000 words per month, 15,806 words per week, 2,258 words per day (work-in-progress)

That is a staggering increase in production—exponential, really. What I wrote of The Jestivan in FOUR MONTHS I now write in a SINGLE WEEK.

Am I writing this to pat myself on the back? A little bit. I’m proud of what I’ve done. But I’m mostly doing this for you guys and girls—my readers. I’m letting you know that I’m dedicated to this process, and you should expect more books from me more frequently.

I’ve given myself both short-term goals and long-term deadlines.

  • Minimum of 2,000 words a day
  • Goal of 2,500 words

Immediate long-term:

  • Erafeen #3‘s first draft completed by October 2nd.
  • Erafeen #3‘s release by January 9th, 2018 (2-year anniversary of The Jestivan‘s release)

Future long-term:

  • Publish FOUR books in 2018 (Erafeen #3 being one of the four).
  • Make a living out of this (2019/2020)

I’m writing like this for both you and me. This is a voyage. Sure I’m captaining the ship, but my readers are my loyal crew. I can’t get through rough waters without you.

Until next time, have an ethical day.

P.S. Sad news, but The Jestivan is no longer free. It’s $2.99 on Amazon as an eBook.

General Updates (8/12/2017)

General Updates (8/12/2017)

Now that The Untenable (Erafeen, #2) has published, my blog posts might slow down, but I will definitely stay on a once-every-two-weeks frequency at the minimum. The reason they’ll slow down is because I’m focused on writing Erafeen #3, and that’s demanding almost all of my time that isn’t spent at my day job.

I want to start this off by announcing that The Jestivan (Erafeen, #1) won’t be free for much longer. Sometime in the coming days it’ll return to its regular price of $2.99 (sometime between 8/14 and 8/18). With that said, it’ll still be free to Kindle Unlimited users (I’ll be enrolling it in KDP Select). This also means that The Jestivan will only be available on Amazon/Amazon Kindle. You won’t be able to purchase it on B&N Nook, Apple iTunes, Smashwords, or Kobo.

The Untenable will also be enrolled in KDP Select, making it free to Kindle Unlimited users while limiting its availability to Amazon/Amazon Kindle.

This is the ideal  move for me with where I’m at in my writing career. Until I establish a larger audience, selling through other platforms isn’t practical. But I promise in the future—after I release more books—you’ll see me broaden my marketing reach.

Speaking of more books, Erafeen #3‘s first draft is growing longer and longer by the day. As of tonight, I’ve hit 57,000 words. That means I’ve written 53,000 words in the past 22 days … PHEW.

Love you, Thad.

This is great news for readers. A January/February release date is still possible. Hopefully I can up my pace even more over the next couple of months.

In other news: Game of Thrones has been awesome, Arrested Development is growing on me, Black Mirror is weird, and I need to make time to read.

I appreciate the readers who are subscribed to my email newsletter and have reached out to me to show their support. Seriously, thank you.

Anyway, I’m out. Good night and have an ethical day.

Updates on The Untenable and Book #3!

Updates on The Untenable and Book #3!

NOTE: Book #2 Pre-Order links, FREE Book #1 information, and Goodreads Giveaway link are at the bottom of post. Also, sorry if this post sounds a little jumbled, but I’m tired and am forcing myself to write this because … content for you guys and girls.

So there’s been a dead period in my blog posts for almost two weeks now, but I have a valid excuse! Seriously. Readers will be thrilled for my reasoning…

I’ve been writing Erafeen #3 non-stop (at least when I’m not at work or spending time with my lovely girlfriend). Let me throw some numbers at you super quick:

Two Thursdays ago (7/20), I decided to crack the whip on my writing habits. I was at a whopping 4,500 words in my first draft of Erafeen #3. Well that just wasn’t going to cut it. Fast-forward to today (8/3) and guess where I’m at now … 39,000 words.

That’s 34,500 words written in 2 weeks (14 days), or 2,464 words per day! I had set a quota of 2,000 words/day, so I’m beating it by nearly half a thousand more.

So yes, I’m beyond exhausted. excited for my readers. Erafeen #3 will publish a lot faster than The Untenable (Erafeen, #2) did after The Jestivan (Erafeen, #1). No more long gaps between books.

Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean Erafeen #3 is releasing next month. It’ll still take some time, but I’m thinking January 2018. Slow your roll, the second book isn’t even out yet.

Speaking of which, The Untenable releases in 3 days on August 6th! The eBook is available for pre-order on Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook, Apple iTunes, Kobo, and Smashwords. There’s also a Goodreads giveaway of the paperback edition of The Untenable that ends on Sunday. FIVE WINNERS WILL BE CHOSEN.

And a reminder that The Jestivan, the first book in the series, is FREE for a limited time. Expect that offer to end by the end of August. So for those of you who haven’t read it yet, hurry up and join in on the fun.

Anyway, thank you for the support! It’s grown exponentially over the past couple months, which has caused me to pursue this writing thing as my full-time career even harder.
